NEW INITIATIVE-WOMEN FOR ELECTION

Women for Election, is an ambitious strategy to work across the political spectrum, to help inspire and equip at least double the number of women to run in the next elections. Through our training and mentoring programmes we have supported thousands of women including many current and former politicians who successfully ran for election.
Over the coming months we are looking forward to engaging with women from diverse backgrounds curious about how they can be the leader they want to see. The barriers are considerable, but these women are amongst a growing number who are putting their hands up for selection to serve.
We would love the academic world to be a part of these events so please check out our lineup of events (free and subsidised) over the coming weeks and do share with interested colleagues and students.
Our schedule for the weeks ahead includes the return of the very popular “Be the Leader You Want to See” training event with Margaret E. Ward. This will take place this Wednesday 15th of September at 6.30pm.
Next week (22nd September) we will be hosting our latest ‘In Conversation With… webinar series with leading Irish Times Political Correspondent Jennifer Bray interviewing Social Democrats Co-Leader, Catherine Murphy T.D.
Finally, our Inspire Campaign School is running again starting September 29th for anyone looking to develop the skills needed to kickstart, or maybe re-start, their political journey.
The campaign school consists of a series of 3 online classes
•            Sept 29th 6.30 – 8.30 pm (Online) Confidence with Orlaith Carmody
•            Oct 6th 6.30-8.30pm (Online) Communications with Margaret E. Ward.
•            Oct 13th 6.30- 8.30pm (Online) Campaigns with Pat Montague
If you would like to be part of this journey with us please make sure you book your place and do share with interested friends and colleagues. I am filled with enthusiasm and optimism as we approach an amazing 10 years of Women for Election and hope you will stay connected with us on this journey!
Please subscribe here if you would like to keep receiving emails from us.
All the best,

ONLINE LECTURE THIS EVENING-Thursday June 24th-
ON CYBER SECURITY IN IRELAND

UCC-Defence Forces Lecture Series:

  • Cyber Security in Ireland – Present Reality and Future Potential

  • Pat Larkin, CEO Ward Solutions and Commandant Ken Sheehan, Senior Communications and Information Services Officer, Officer Commanding of 1 Brigade CIS Company

  • Thurs 24th June, 6.30-8.00pm (Irish/UK time)

  • The lecture will also be recorded so that people may view it later if they wish.

Questions regarding Ireland’s cyber capabilities have come into sharper focus since the recent cyber attack on the HSE. Before we can discuss the solution, we need to understand the problem. What is the current situation, how are international organisations, Ireland and other states engaging with the cyber domain? Considering the potential changes required following the HSE cyber attack, what are the possible steps that could be taken to improve the State’s cyber capability?

Pat Larkin is CEO of Ward Solutions one of Irelands largest indigenous cyber providers and board member of Cyber Ireland. Prior to his role in Ward Solutions, Pat served 14 years in the Irish Defence Forces from 1984 to 1998, retiring as a Captain, in both line Artillery Corps and the Communication and Information Services corps as level 3 data security and IT operations officer. During his time in the Defence Forces Pat served overseas with the United Nations in Lebanon. Pat holds a BSc in Computer Applications from Dublin City University.

Commandant Ken Sheehan has been a member of the Defence Forces since 2002, and has deployed on peacekeeping operations in Africa, the Balkans and the Middle East. He is a Senior Communications and Information Services Officer, and is currently Officer Commanding of 1 Brigade CIS Company. He holds an MA in International Relations, a HDip in Leadership, Management and Contemporary Security, and a BSc in Computer Science, from UCC. He is currently completing a MSc in Forensic Computing and Cyber Crime Investigation.

The UCC-Defence Forces Lecture Series aims to contribute to informed public debate on contemporary global security challenges, how such problems may impact on Ireland and how Ireland can contribute to addressing regional and global security threats. The lecture series is jointly organised by the Defence Forces and UCC’s Colleges of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences and Business and Law. Previous lectures in the series can be viewed at: https://www.ucc.ie/en/government-and-politics/research/departmentofgovernmentandpoliticsguestlecturesandseminars/ucc-defenceforceslectureseries/

NEW PG COURSE TCD

Trinity College Dublin-new Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Social Data Science in the 2021-22 academic year.

Applied Social Data Science

The demand for data-driven solutions in business, government and the non-profit sectors is increasing globally at a record pace.  Employers in a wide range of industries now realise the need for talented individuals who are skilled in statistical and computational methods to provide insight into large and unique forms of data.

Against this backdrop, Trinity will be launching a new Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Social Data Science starting in September 2021.  This is a one-year, full-time programme that will prepare students who have a background in the social sciences to meet this growing demand for data scientists in the labour market.

Specifically, this course will introduce you to fundamentals in quantitative social science research methods and state-of-the-art analytic approaches from the fields of statistics and machine learning.  You will gain fluency in two highly demanded programming languages, R and Python, and will gain experience in analytical topics such as advanced statistics, machine learning, quantitative text analysis, and forecasting.

This programme is designed for students who do not have an extensive computing or statistical background.  Most students will have taken a basic statistics or quantitative research methods module equivalent during their undergraduate training, but this is not a formal prerequisite.

To learn more about the programme and how you can apply, please visit:

https://www.tcd.ie/Political_Science/postgraduate/pg-dip-applied-social-data-science/

Please email boussalc@tcd.ie if you have any questions, I am happy to discuss it with you.

CFP FOR CONFERENCE ON THE AFTER BREXIT-OCTOBER 28-29TH 2021-
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS JUNE 30TH

The EU after Brexit:New Options for Differentiated Integration? The conference will take place at the University of Salamanca (Spain) on 28-29 October 2021.The event is organized by Juan Santos Vara (University of Salamanca) and Ramses Wessel (University of Groningen).
The aim of this workshop is to assess the implications of Brexit for European integration. While part of the scholarship sees Brexit as a tragedy for the European integration process, others have pointed to possible advantages that would allow for further integration in certain areas. In any case, Brexit seems to have triggered a new debate on the ways in which the EU Member States could proceed, together or in smaller groups. In that sense the current debates reflect the earlier discussions on a geometrie variable or concentric circles. Apart from assessing theoretical, conceptual implications of Brexit for integration scenarios, the conference will address different policy areas and highlight options and obstacles to provide input to the Conference on the Future of Europe that was officially launched on the 9 May 2021 – 71 years after the signing of the Schuman Declaration and 76 years after the end of the Second World War. The Conference on the Future of Europe will open a new space for debate with citizens to address Europe’s challenges and priorities. Since its creation, the European Union has faced multiple challenges. With the COVID19 pandemic, the European Union’s unique model was challenged like never before.
We invite papers on various topics related to the implications of Brexit for European integration, including:
– Theoretical approaches to European integration and differentiation
– Integration/differentiation on EU principles and values
– Integration/differentiation in the internal market
– Integration/differentiation in CFSP/CSDP
– Integration/differentiation in the AFSJ
– Integration/differentiation in environmental/climate policy
Submission and selection of potential contributions
Interested researchers (in every stage of their careers) are invited to mail an abstract (in English) of around 500 words (approximately one page) addressing the conference theme to savajuan@usal.es and/or r.a.wessel@rug.nl no later than 30 June 2021. Please include your name, email and affiliation along with your abstract.
As we aim for the publication of a special issue at European Papers: A Journal on Law and Integration, paper proposals will be subject to a strict selection. The selection of the papers will be communicated to the speakers by the end of July 2021.
Confirmed participants are expected to provide complete drafts of their papers of around 8000 words no later than 20 October 2021.
Travel costs and accommodation
The Jean Monnet Network European Papers: A Journal on Law and Integration (610707-EPP-1-2019-1-ES-EPPJMO-NETWORK) will cover travel costs as well local expenses for the selected participants, including accommodation in Salamanca. The event can also be followed online through Zoom.
